The Four Tenets at Elevate

The Four Tenets at Elevate

The definition of a tenet is as follows: one of the principles on which a belief or theory is based.

The current tenets that are espoused at Elevate by the organization's leadership are as follows:

  • Likeability

  • Coachability

  • An Asset to the Team

  • Being a Good Uke (Partner)

Through the progression of these tenets, advancement can be followed within the organization. The question is: what do these tenets mean to you? Do you agree with them? Do you disagree with them? What are examples that you observe from others who exemplify these beliefs? What examples have you observed that do not align with these beliefs?

Where are you currently for each espoused tenet, if there were a scale from 1 to 10?

Likeability:

Give people reasons to like you. Examples include, but are not limited to:

Trim your nails

Bow on and off the mat

Wash your Gi

Don’t hurt your partners

Brush your teeth

Be honest

Shower

Work on your defensiveness

Be polite

Say hello to your teammates

Coachability:

Coachability can typically be broken down into receptivity/openness to experience, as well as the capacity to understand complex concepts. Examples can include:

Studying

Preparing before class

Listening

Accepting advice

Learning to receive feedback

Discerning who to take suggestions/advice from

Developing positive relationships

Implementing suggestions

Paying attention

Working within the Elevate App

Asset to the Team:

This typically means an individual must achieve a decent score on a scale of 1-10 in terms of Likeability and Coachability. Meaning they provide energy as opposed to taking energy. They are missed when they are not at practice. That is a pretty good measure of being an asset. Examples include:

Shows up for self and others

Brings value to the team

Provides benefit to others around them

Aligns values with their teammates' values to reach goals

Sacrifice their time for others

Aligns with the values of the organization

Shares vision and willingness to reach it

Knows what they are doing

Brings new knowledge to the team

Makes others want to come to practice because they will be there

Being a Good Partner (Uke):

This comes down to being a good partner in play. And often, this seems to be one of the more challenging tenets to achieve. Uke has a meaning of "receiving/one who receives." Examples of being a good Uke:

Uke is likable

Uke is coachable

Uke is an asset to the team

On the same page with their teammates

Is not overly cooperative when drilling

Not overly competitive when drilling

People feel safe working with this person at all times

People derive benefit each time they work with this person

They are recommended by others to work with new students and guests (novice - advanced)

Are trusted
